Trouble's brewing: Chap 22-23

What did you think about Aibileen calling all the children she's looked after her own? What about Mae Mobley calling Aibileen her real mama? WHat would Elizabeth do if she heard that?

How long did you laugh about the commodes in Hilly's yard? Was that what you were expecting Skeeter to do?

Do you think Mr. Leefolt knows about the book?

Aibileen states "She laughs and it hurts my heart. Cause everybody care. Black, white, deep down we all do." How do you think Skeeter is going to handle the social repercussions of her actions? How do we get past being hurt even though, as Aibileen would say, we all care?

What got in to Celia Foote coming over unannounced to Elizabeth's house?

Do you think Hilly will find out what happened to get Minny hired? What will she do when she finds out?

I understand Aibileen calling those kids her own. I know some teachers and even babysitters who call the kids they take care of their own and they really feel a bond with them and a desire to protect them. I think that is pretty normal, especially if the children are in your care the majority of the time. Regarding Mae Mobley calling Aibileen Mama, that is pretty sad and complicated. She is, in almost every sense, filling the role of Mae's mom. It's too bad this thought hasn't dawned on Elizabeth. I think Elizabeth would refuse to take responsibility if she heard Mae Mobley refer to Aibileen as her mother. She'd blame Mae for being a useless dumb child and Aibileen for being a terrible maid who's corrupting her daughter. She probably wouldn't do much more than threaten her, though. She can't be without help for longer than a few days.

I loved that so much. I laughed so much when I imagined Hilly's reaction. I was just expecting Skeeter to print the initiative as it was written. This is so much better!

Do you think Mr. Leefolt knows about the book?

No, I don't think he knows. I think he would be taking stronger actions if he did.

Aibileen states "She laughs and it hurts my heart. Cause everybody care. Black, white, deep down we all do." How do you think Skeeter is going to handle the social repercussions of her actions? How do we get past being hurt even though, as Aibileen would say, we all care?

I don't know how Skeeter will handle the repercussions. She is becoming more and more aware that the reality she grew up in is based on lies and oppression. She is definitely feeling alone. This new awareness and her subsequent reactions to it are severing most of her long-standing social ties and even some of her new ones. I don't know how she will go about life as "normal" after all of this. Getting past hurt is so tough. The only way out is through, but we never forget the hurt completely.

What got in to Celia Foote coming over unannounced to Elizabeth's house?

I think she just got sick of waiting by the phone all day. Resting all the time didn't save her baby, so now she is ready to move and get things going in her life again. She had to start somewhere.

Do you think Hilly will find out what happened to get Minny hired? What will she do when she finds out?

I think she might find out. She is so nosy, especially as it pertains to someone whose life she hoped she ruined. I think she will do everything in her power to destroy Minny again.
